Baby Video Monitor
Pros and Cons of Using a Video Monitor in the Baby's Room
Sometimes a parent wants to be able to check on their child or children without having to go into the room or when they are away from home. This is possible through the use of a baby video monitor. While this can be a good idea and has a lot of potential benefits, there are also some things to consider before going through with purchasing and using this type of monitor.
Type of Monitor
The typical monitor meant for use with babies can only view a certain area, so unless you just want to see the baby in its room, say when it's in the crib, you may want to get multiple monitors or cameras. Those who want to see the baby as well as anything the caregiver may do with the child when they're not at home would be better off with nanny cams or home security cameras around the home. In some cases, multiple cameras can be purchased that use the same monitor. In others, the cameras work through wifi and the parents can check in on the child using their smartphone or their computer instead of having to use a limited range monitor. This is better for those that want to be able to check on a baby from far away.
Should you decide on any type of camera that records sound, some states require you to notify anyone that might be recorded of the presence of the cameras. Those cameras without sound don't have this requirement, making it possible to keep a nanny cam a secret from caregivers if this is desired. Anything recorded illegally can't be admissible in court, so check out the laws before deciding on the camera to use.
Choosing a Monitor
When purchasing a video monitor or camera, video baby monitor reviews are always a good place to start. They can alert you to any cameras that tend to have a lot of issues. Also, check the frequency that the monitor uses. It should be at least 900 MHz or there may be issues with interference from other electronic devices. It's also a good idea to look into which monitors have the best picture quality in low light and which have an easily visible low-battery light.
